Panic Disorder
A common condition characterized by Panic attacks (Bouts of very severe anxiety). The attacks are unprovoked, sudden and out of the blue; they last a brief while and end equally suddenly.

The person experiences symptoms like thudding of the heart, suffocation, chest discomfort, dizziness, numbness/ tingling, hot or cold flushes accompanied by a feeling of impending doom. The feeling that he could die at that very moment, suffer from a heart attack or go crazy.
The first bout leads to a fear of having another attack – Anticipatory Anxiety.

It is followed by a fear of being alone, unaccompanied when he is likely

to have the next attack. The person could stop going out and decide to remain homebound or to avoid crowds for fear of being embarrassed – Agoraphobia.

The symptoms of a Panic attack can be very distressing, and the disease can become highly disabling. A search for a medical condition reveals nothing, the reassurance that there is nothing wrong medically gives a lot of relief. That in turn results in the person going for repeated investigations and frequent visit to medical specialist for long periods, incurring a lot of expenditure besides continuing to suffer.
Treatment involves correcting the serotonin and norepinephrine deficiency in the brain. Cognitive Behavior therapy can be very useful when combined with medication.
